Is tES/tACS safe?Updated 2 months ago

Somnee directly improves sleep quality by delivering personalized neurostimulation called tACS (transcranial alternating current stimulation) — a type of tES (transcranial electrical stimulation) that has been safely studied and used for decades.

A well-regarded study published in the journal Clinical Neurophysiology found 'conventional,' low-intensity tES was safe, reporting "no serious adverse events (SAEs) have been reported so far in over 18,000 sessions.”

Here’s a brief excerpt from the study’s meta-analysis, defining the threshold for low-intensity tES:

“Safety is established for low-intensity ‘conventional’ TES defined as <4 mA, up to 60 min duration per day… In specific paradigms with amplitudes of up to 10 mA, frequencies in the kHz range appear to be safe."

The intensity levels used by Somnee's Smart Sleep Headband are even lower than those found to be safe in the study.

The full report is published and available on the National Library of Medicine website.
